PhD training: Exposing Obstacles to Reform

In response to a January 2023 Nature article, PhD training is no longer fit for purpose – it needs reform now, which raised the issue of relevance of current doctoral education globally, Lehigh University felt compelled to respond. Leading the response is Himanshu Jain, principle investigator of Lehigh University’s Innovations in Graduate Education (IGE) project PRIDE. Partnerships with Researchers in Industry for Doctoral Education aims to engage and collaborate with industry partners so doctoral students can develop the mindset of how professionals address real life problems in their field. The program is named after Louis Pasteur, a 19-century scientist who supported a use-inspired research approach to discovery.

This Letter to the Editor in Nature’s ‘Correspondence’ section presents a combined perspective of faculty, industry and university administration.
